Competition Guidelines
Competitors should be aware of the NASDE Competition Rules in addition to those below.
GENERAL
INFORMATION ON COMPETITION
GUIDELINES AND JUDGING CRITERIA FOR
SWING COMPETITION
REQUIREMENTS FOR
COMPETITION
1. Competitor must hold a
weekend package ticket to the Capital Swing Dancer’ Convention and
pay the registration fee.
Dance in a division level recognized by the World Swing Dance
Council Points Registry.
2. All contestants must be at
least 18 years of age, or have parent's signed consent for ages 13 –
17 (exception is
Champions Invitational).
NASDE rules state you must be 18 years or older to compete in
the NASDE competitions (Showcase, Classic and Strictly Swing
Champions).
3. Must have a Bib Number that
will be assigned to you at the time of registration. There will be a $5.00
replacement charge in case of a lost Bib.
4. All contestants must sign a
waiver and are responsible for reading these guidelines. You are also responsible for
checking the postings to assure you are placed in the correct
dance/division. Postings available at Registration
desk.
5. All contests must have a
minimum of three (3) couples to be a valid
contest.
CATEGORIES OF
COMPETITION
JACK
& JILL DIVISIONS ($15 contest fee; $1 WSDC
surcharge)
1.
Champions Invitational:
By voting process.
2.
Masters (Advanced/Intermediate Level): (a) Must be at least 50 years
of age; (b) recognized as an advanced or intermediate dancer.
3.
AllStar 2003: This division must have a minimum of 10 couples to be
a valid contest. Less than that number of participants will be
automatically registered in the Advanced Division. You can elect to enter
this division based on either of the following criteria: (a) in
the last two years have placed first through fifth in an
Invitational or Champions Division at a WSDC recognized event, or
(b) in the last two years you have placed first through fifth in a
Classic or Showcase division, or (c) currently recognized as an
Advanced competitor with a minimum of 40 Advanced points in the WSDC
Points Registry, or (d) full-time WCS dance instructor (primary
source of income). If you elected to dance in this
division in 2002 here at CSD, you must dance in this division in
2003.
4. Advanced Level: (a)
recognized as an advanced dancer by the World Swing Dance Council
Point Registry (30 Points).
5. Intermediate Level: (a)
recognized as an intermediate level dancer by the World Swing Dance
Council Point Registry (20-29 Points).
6. Novice Level: (a) Recognized as a Novice
level dancer by the World Swing Dance Council Point Registry (1-19
Points)
7. Newcomer Level: (a) Anyone knowing the basic
patterns of Swing dancing, and (b) have not placed in a novice
division at any competition (local or
national).
8. Open Junior: Open to all
levels: must be at least 13 - 17 years of age, and have parent's
signed consent.
COUPLES
DIVISIONS ($35 contest fee per couple)
Note: If one partner
qualifies for a higher division, the couple must dance in the higher
division.
9. Strictly Swing Champions: If
either partner has danced regularly in an Invitational, Champion or
Master division of Country, you must dance in this division.
10. Strictly Swing Advanced: For
the advanced dancers not qualifying for the Champion
Division.
11. Strictly Swing Novice or
Intermediate: For competitors below points needed to dance in the
advanced level.
12. Strictly Swing Junior Open:
Open to all levels of performance - any Junior between the ages of
13-17, with parent’s signed consent.
13. Classic: Open to all contestants 18
years or older and all levels of skill. NASDE Points are awarded for
this Division.
14. Showcase: Open to all
contestants 18 years or older and all levels of skill. NASDE Points are awarded for
this Division.
CONTESTANTS' SIGN-UPS
Thursday,
February 13
7:30-9:00 p.m.
Friday,
February 14
4:00-6:30 p.m.
Saturday,
February 15 8:30-11:00 a.m. and 5:30–6:30 p.m.
(Sunday comps only)
Forms
will be available at all hours at the Registration Desk to assist in
expediting the sign-up process.
JUDGES' MEETING
Friday,
February 15th, 6:00 p.m.
CONTESTANTS' MEETINGS
There
will be “Roll Call” contestant meetings, please check schedule for
times and location.
They are not mandatory, but recommended. Couples competitors should
send one representative to this meeting. Be sure to read this
rule/guidelines package.
If you have any questions regarding the competition, you may
ask the Chief Judge or Contestants’ Representative. You may also
petition for change of dance level. Always check the postings to
ensure you are listed in the correct dance/division and at the
correct level.
JUDGES
There
will be a minimum of five Judges and a possible timekeeper. In addition, CSD will have a
Contestants' Representative, one Chief Judge, and Alternate Judges
available.
SCORING
SYSTEM
Scored
by computer and relative placement. Contestants will be
judged in the preliminaries and/or semi-finals as an individual and
in any finals as a couple.
MUSIC
Music
for the Strictly Swing and Jack & Jill competitions will be the
responsibility of CSD's Convention Chair and
DJs.
CLASSIC AND
SHOWCASE
Music/Floor
Tryouts
Music:
Couples are responsible for their own music selection. Music must be on cued
cassette or CD, identified with the contestant's name, and should be
given to the DJ at least 2 hours prior to their competition. Tryouts: Classic and Showcase couples
ONLY. You are welcome
to use the Ballroom on Friday until 3:00 p.m. or from 7:00-9:00 a.m.
on Saturday. At the
present time, DJs will not be available to play your music.
POSTING OF
RESULTS
The
results of the competitions will be posted on Sunday evening
following Awards. The
location for the posting and session will be announced.
PROCEDURE FOR
COMPETITIONS
Competitors
may compete in one Jack & Jill contest, and two of the couples
contests (with different partners), i.e., Strictly Swing, Classic or
Showcase.
IMPORTANT
NOTE: IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE BALLROOM WHEN YOUR NAME/NUMBER IS CALLED
FOR YOUR COMPETITION, YOU WILL NOT DANCE. PLEASE BE AWARE OF SCHEDULED
COMPETITION TIMES AND BE PREPARED (WITH YOUR BIB NUMBER) TO
DANCE.
JACK & JILL
COMPETITION
Newcomer
and Open Junior:
One
round (finals only).
Judged by relative placement and as a couple. You will dance for a period
of 1 ˝ to 2 minutes, depending on the number of participants. If uneven number, some
competitors will dance twice.
The toss of the dice or the computer will make the random
selection of for your dance partner.
Novice,
Intermediate, Masters, Advanced and AllStar
2003:
Preliminaries,
Semi-finals and Finals (depending on number of dance entries). Judged by relative
placement.
Preliminaries, Semi-finals will be judged individually; in
the Finals you will be judged as a couple. You will be dancing for a
period of 1 ˝ -2 minutes.
The number of contestants brought back for the finals will be
determined in advance and where a natural break occurs when
possible. The clock often makes some of the decisions.
Champions
Invitational:
One
round/finals only. Judging will be by relative placement. You will
be dancing for a period of approximately 2 minutes – possibly one or
two songs with a review song. There may be some flexibility in
format for this division.

Strictly
Swing Advanced, Intermediate, Novice, and Junior Levels:
Self-explanatory based on dance skill level of highest relative
placement and as a couple.
Your dance time will be for 1 ˝ - 2 minutes
approximately
(depending on couples participating). You may dance to more than
one song depending on number of contestants. Competition will be in
heats. Swing dancing 90% - no lifts, aerials or acrobatic
moves. Penalties will
be assessed for lack of swing content and any other infraction of
the rules.
Strictly
Swing competitors please note: NO COSTUMES and/or CHOREOGRAPHED
ROUTINES - JUST DANCE!
Similar clothing is acceptable.
SPORTSMANSHIP
Good
sportsmanship and proper behavior is expected. If a contestant should have
a cause that needs to be discussed, speak only with the Chief Judge
or the Contestants’ Representative.
JUDGING CRITERIA (FIRST LOOKING FOR THE
THREE T’S)
Timing: Timing points are determined
by the ability of the dancer to dance on the Down beat of the music,
and to include syncopations that are also on the beats of the
music.
Technique: "How Well You Do What You
Do": We are looking for good footwork, balance, control, frame and
line and how well turns & spins are executed. Well controlled arms and
hands.
Teamwork: The ability of the partners
to work together as a team. One person should not be obviously "out
dancing" the other.
TEAMWORK with action-reaction is essential in good
dancing.
Content: "What You Do": the content
is the CHOREOGRAPHY, planned or spontaneous. Musical interpretation
through the physical movement.
Showing variety and contrast will enhance your dance
performance.
Showmanship: "How Well You Sell What You
Do": showmanship/presentation is the ability of the dancers to keep
the audience attention for the entire length of the performance.
